the goal of the study presented in this paper is to find a suitable direct-driven surface mounted permanent magnet motor to replace an induction motor and its gearbox for an industrial application requiring 5KW and 50rpm.the design process is first described with some discussion of the calculation of the flux densitu in the airgap.distributed windings with one slot per phase and concentrated windings with fractional slot number per pole per phase ,are then investigated .it is shown that designs with ahigh number of poles, concentrated windings and an irregular distribution of slots give the best performance
